Winnipeg Jets Logos Unveiled
The Winnipeg Jets unveiled their logos today at 5pm ET via a post on their official website:

New Winnipeg Jets Primary Logo
“True North Sports & Entertainment felt it was important for the new Winnipeg Jets to develop a strong new identity,” said Mark Chipman, Chairman & Governor of True North Sports & Entertainment. “We felt it was important to authenticate the name Jets and we believe the new logo does that through its connection to our country’s remarkable Air Force heritage, including the rich history and relationship that our city and province have enjoyed with the Canadian Forces.”

New Winnipeg Jets Alternate Logo
“We have always had a close relationship with 17 Wing throughout the years, dating back to our annual Manitoba Moose Military Night,” said Dorian Morphy, Senior Director, Marketing & Brand Management of True North Sports & Entertainment. “We are thrilled to be able to continue this relationship in a significant way. The design cues for the plane were inspired by the military jets flown by the Air Force over the years. So not only were we able to establish a new identity for our brand, but we were able to maintain a traditional, time honoured look to the logo.”

Winnipeg Jets Script Logo
The announcement was made only 45 minutes before the actual unveiling – on the heels of a graphic showing this logo leaked earlier in the day. Uniforms will be unveiled at a later date.

Friday, July 22, 2011 at 17:27It's not as horrible as some are opining… well done in my opinion glad they stayed traditional with the colors from before they left... proudly Canadian + it shows… love the fact that there is no typography on the primary… all too common these days… it's a true crest for a sweater… i like how they incorporated the jet into the Canadian maple leaf… the hint towards the True North ownership is a nice touch for me… love the alternate (excellent for a shoulder patch)… script logo is nice as well, sleek and instantly identifiable a criticism = the jet is a little too simple… I understand why, it might take away from the maple leaf if it gets too complex… but the jet itself could have been executed better… maybe a cockpit canopy or more defined tail fin… hope the uni's are well done...

Friday, July 22, 2011 at 17:38I like all three. I think they aren't too gimmicky, they're clean and modern. I'd give them a B+.

Friday, July 22, 2011 at 17:52Very disappointed....I can't tell you how many more solid designs I have seen on this site, Uniwatch, etc. The "northern notch" just looks out of place. The circle puck thing just looks TOO simple. I can't put my finger on it but it's just blah blah blah.

Friday, July 22, 2011 at 20:52Not a big fan of slapping leafs on everything, but this one actually works because of the roundel. Overall, agreeing with the other poster, B+.

Friday, July 22, 2011 at 20:58Love the alternate and script, hate the primary. Jet is way too simplistic.

Friday, July 22, 2011 at 21:50I am not happy with these one bit. I work in sports retail in Winnipeg, and most people that came in after it was released were pretty let down as well. The team is the Jets, not the Maple Leafs right? But for some reason there is only ONE jet in amongst 3 Maple Leafs. Paul, you say the Jet is simple so that you don't overdo the Leaf, but that's backwards, the team is the JETS.

Friday, July 22, 2011 at 22:43Wow, terrible. Here's a chance with a fresh start to brand your team innovatively and what we get is a circle with a jet in it. Looks like a stock logo in a video game. This is the NHL. Can't wait for the refresh in 3 years.

Friday, July 22, 2011 at 23:16I don't like that logo at all. Looks like something you would see on a patch, but certainly not something for a sports jersey.

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 00:49Like the alternate all they needed on the prime logo was to write Winnipeg. All nhl teams are trying to do simple schemes. This works, let's just wait how it looks on the ice.

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 00:50Its growing on me - give it a chance. Think of all the best / classic NHL logos - the REdwings, the Bruins, the Hawks, Philly.. Simple design yet immediately noticable. Remember in design - less is more!

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 04:30This is a terrible, terrible logo. As a graphic designer (who loves and plays hockey) with decades of experience creating logos – including sports logos – I can say with some authority that it is not original (for those who may be unaware, this is almost exactly like the old Royal Canadian Air Force roundel. Nor is it interesting ... it's very two-dimensional and is too simple, overall. It is cold, stark and unimaginative. This translates into an uninspiring as well as an uninspired design. And it is terrible from a marketing standpoint – it says nothing about the City of Winnipeg. Yes, yes, there is the 17 Wing base nearby but Trenton, Bagotville, Goose Bay and Cold Lake and other places in Canada have bases, too. I was so excited about the team coming back to Winnipeg but this is such a huge disappointment. Not even a 1 out of 10 from me on this one. Yech. Blah. Boooo! The only good thing is the fact that this one will fall by the wayside when they revamp the old design in a year or so. Save your money, Jets fans, for the good stuff!

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 07:07With the opportunity to create something brand new from scratch, this is a very disappointing logo. I think the original logo has much more appeal and marketability. I predict sales of the old logo merchandise will keep pace with the sales of these dogs. And I agree with earlier posters who say save your money, the original logo will be back in a couple of years.

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 07:15I think it looks great. Simple, clean, yet instantly recognizable. The jet has enough detail to right away recogonize what it is. No need to add all sorts of other stuff to it. "for those who may be unaware, this is almost exactly like the old Royal Canadian Air Force roundel." And I think that's what they had in mind.

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 11:12bit late on my 2 cents worth of comments on this, but here goes. The logo; "it's okay" and that's probably good enough. It's better than most sports logos, certainly than most MLB teams. I do question whether it weighs to heavily on the RCAF theme. And, the scrip is somewhat awkward in spacing and weight. That said, now lets play some hockey!

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 12:48I honestly like it, no other NHL team has a logo in this style and it's very close to the RCAF which shows a lot of pride. Simple. Clean. Proud. Canadian. All great words to discribe the city of Winnipeg. I'll proudly wear this every time I watch a Winnipeg Jets game either on TV or in the MTS Center GO JETS GO!!!

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 12:57Everything you said about being 2 dimensional, not representing the city, stark, and unimaginative, can be applied to great nhl logos. canadiens, maple leafs, bruins, flyers, etc.

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 14:26awesome job.... if the jersey matches I'm from Chicago and I'm buying a Ladd jersey GREAT JOB!!!!!!

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 16:40I admit I had to look at the logo scheme a few times, but I think this is a nice concept. I like what the Jets are trying to incorporate. What I would have done was use the script logo as their main logo and the current main logo as one of their shoulder patch logos. On the script logo, if it were used as the main logo, I probably would have used the jet where the maple leaf is. Other than that, very simple design. I can not wait to see what the uniforms look like.
Aaron
Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 16:44On second thought, if the script logo were the main logo, use jet and maple leaf combo where the maple leaf sits.

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 17:46which logo will be on their jersey

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 17:46old one too dated

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 19:38It resembles the dated cf-18 rather than the futuristic Joint Strike Fighter f-35

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 21:36If you are trying to brand your new team with its own identity, you should not borrow heavily from an existing organization's logo (RCAF). Save for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Canadian maple leaf needs to be left out of NHL teams' logos and should be reserved for the national team only. The logo needs to depict what is unique to Winnipeg. I have nothing against simple logos but it has to be original. Too bad True North did not stick to their original plan of starting off completely fresh by not naming the team "Jets". Clean and simple but lacks its own identity and originality. Score: 6/10

Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 23:23Question: Didn't the Jets name their team after Bobby Hull, the "Golden Jet"? to help entice him to jump to the team (that and a million dollars). If so, hanging onto the name "Jets" seems strange to me. As for the unis and logos, I like the first one, with the Jet on top of the maple leaf. That makes a great jersey crest. How much detail could you expect them to put on the thing? The outline is best. The other 2 are just so-so. The one with the crossed sticks looks like the alternate LA Kings logo from a while ago, and the last one looks like it should be on their summer softball team uniforms.

Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 02:42The red maple leaf makes it look like the plane is exploding.

Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 16:58the script logo looks more like it could be for a baseball team. somewhat similar to the Blue Jays logo. shouldve kept their original logos, but they will probably be saving those for throwback nights to make more money selling sweaters. all very boring logo though.

Monday, July 25, 2011 at 09:50If the plan was to last in Winnipeg only a few years because of poor revenue then they found their winner. This is uninspiring and few outside of Winnipeg will buy anything with this logo unless they suddenly become NHL Champions. They'll end up in Milwaukee before 2015!

Monday, July 25, 2011 at 11:50Boring. Looks like clipart

Monday, July 25, 2011 at 19:20All you who are bashing the design really didnt see any of the inspiration behind the design. You know theres a CFB in Winnipeg? You know the history the city has with the RCAF? dates back allllllll the way to the 1920's! This is a salute to all of our flyboys and our forces in general. Amazing stuff. This is hockey, not the cartoon network. Needed a simple design. It fits the situation and the city. Leave it alone.

Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 10:29Inspiration is nice but if it doesn't look good it doesn't look good, and this doesn't look good.
RC
Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 17:04@Patrick We are not complaining about the inspiration. I think it's great that they chose to honour Winnipeg's history with the RCAF. The design itself though is not very inspiring. The intention was good but the execution fell short in my opinion. It is also my opinion that had more time been available, we would have seen something more creative based on the same inspiration. It could be better but it could also be worse.

Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 03:18I like the complaining here. Its funny. I guess those who dont like it would rather have . . . what? a cartoon 747 with a hockey stick? This logo looks great and it looks leathal. Bring on the Jets!!!

Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 00:30Yes, yes, like I said, we know there is a base outside of Winnipeg. Other cities in Canada have bases, too - in BC, Alberta, Quebec, Ontario, etc., etc. So the fact this doesn't really have any tangible, recognizable and distinctive Winnipeg connection means it is a FAILURE. Not only that, but give your head a shake for a second - do you really think it's the best idea to have little kids wearing what amounts to be the RCAF roundel? Is that really appropriate? I am not a peacenik - I was in the reserve and worked for DND at CFB Kingston, at RMC and the National Defence College - and it is a little questionable morally, if you ask me, to have CHILDREN wearing what amounts to an ad for the Canadian Forces. The other thing that is highly questionable is that apparently the CF were directly involved in the design of this logo. That's kinda creepy. There's something that is not quite right about this. If I were a Jets fan I would either buy the old sweater or wait until they bring in a revamp of the old one - they will likely do this in a year or so. Surely when they do fans will scoop 'em up and drop this one like a rock.
