The Carolina Panthers inadvertently had their new primary logo for the 2012 NFL season unveiled by Nike just prior to yesterday’s Pro Bowl.

The new, slightly modernized version of the original Panthers logo was shown by Nike via their Facebook page displaying team-logo gloves players were wearing for the Pro Bowl game, the shot of the Carolina Panthers gloves showed this new logo.

Carolina Panthers President Danny Morrison explained the change after the new logo was discovered, “We have one of the finest and most recognizable logos in the NFL and (we) wanted to make it as modern as possible without losing the dramatic essence of the mark”

The Panthers further explained the change via a post on their official website:

Staying true to the roots of the panther with subtle updates reflecting a tougher, more defined panther, the evolved logo is evocative of the popular panther statues found on the grounds of Bank of America Stadium. The white outline around the logo has been removed to create a more dimensional feel and to keep the focus on the features of the panther.

The logotype has been refined to be a modern reflection of the Panthers brand. The new font subtly nods to the swipe of a panther, through a three stripe element incorporated into the “A” of “PANTHERS.” The angle and graphic accents in the letters were custom created and inspired by the swift, sleek nature of a panther.

The uniforms are not expected to be changed drastically, the Panthers and the rest of the NFL will be switching uniform manufacturers from Reebok to Nike in time for next season leading many to believe major uniform overhauls are coming.

Along with the new logo, a new wordmark logo was also unveiled.

A definite improvement on one of the worst NFL logos of all-time. Still has a college mascot look - not as cool as Jacksonville's big cat graphics.

They will go to black helmets also.

Has the black helemts thing been confirmed? This logo would probably look better with black helmets. The silver helmets could work.

It might be a better idea to drop the silver altogether. One less team with a Blue/Silver color scheme is good for the League.

@Todd... Worst logo in NFL??? Not so much. It may not have a classic look but the Panthers haven't been around too long... I like the new logo, the "talks" of black helmets for next season combined with the Nike Pro Combat uniforms that will be used next season in the league is very exciting.

One eye is bigger than the other. It looks like it is winking.

Don't feel like it is an improvement at all. The cat looks like it just got punched in its left eye.

The worst logo(?) in the NFL is the Cleveland Browns, who don't really have a logo. They need to do something (anything) with those tired-ass helmets. Even bringing back the little "brownie" dude would be an improvement!

This is the most insignificant logo change in the history of team sports.

If someone already said this, I apologize. One eye is clearly bigger than the other. This logo is a huge improvement, but still not great.

@None of your, I really doubt that. The recent Dodger logo change was more insignificant. There has also been many simple updates by teams in the past.

I like the new subtle changes to the logo, but prefer the old watermark to the new (though it does have an old-school feel to it, which I dig.) As far as the rumor regarding black helmets? Let's hope it's just a rumor. The teams with black helmets, the better. As far as I'm concerned the only team with a black helmet should be the team that originally had one of the only ones, the Steelers (full disclosure-I'm a Steelers and Eagles fan, lol.)

The smaller eye looks adds the appearance of dimension. It is supposed to make the Panther appear to have its left ear further back in the distance.

Its the same kind of change the Lions did a few years ago. They both had a fierce type of cat as their logo and just modernized it. Nice move.

I think it looks good, I have no problem with teams that update, modernize, or make their logo current, what I hate are teams the change their logo and team colours completely, example Tampa Bay.

@ Tim: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' colour change turned out to be a change for the better. But I hear what you're saying. In most cases, the original colours of certain teams seem to suit them a lot better then the complete colour change ever did. Case in point, Buffalo Sabres, Washington Wizards(nee Bullets)/Capitals, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks! Then there's teams like the Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Sacramento Kings, San Diego Padres, and Dallas Mavericks changes like the Buccaneers have actually thrived with the colour change.

Aaron, I'll give you the colour change for the Buc's but that new logo they changed to is terrible, at least the old one had character, they could've updated the Buc head to look a little meaner with no wink.

It looks like a high school logo. Not as good as the original

  22. Aaron
    Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 20:42

Well, the original buccaneer with the current color scheme would've looked great. Perhaps if the Bucs did it that way, they could've used the current logo as their secondary.

Call me old school but I like the original. Subtle changes aren't bad - maybe it's because I just bought a Cam Newton jersey :)

As a design student and sports fan, I have hated the Panthers and Jaguars logos since the beginning. And the Charlotte Bobcats could be the worst in sports. It's tricky to make a logo from the head of an animal, and all those logos have just a cat head. With a team name like the Panthers or Jaguars, I think they should be primarily black, and menacing looking. But the Panthers thought for some reason they should use a brighter, uglier shade of Carolina blue instead. It's very dated and not menacing at all
