And the towel (not a rag) is a symbol from the days of coach EA Diddle who was one of the winningest coaches in NCAA basketball history. He often carried a red towel around and eventually the student body followed suit and it became a symbol of the university.
A hilltopper references the time early in the university's history when the students and faculty climbed to the top of (now called) Cherry Hill to establish the university as we know it today. And anyone who has climbed that hill well knows what a hilltopper is
