UT Martin Skyhawks Logos History

Previously known as the Pacers (and Volunteers, before that), the University of Tennessee at Martin adopted the name Skyhawks for its athletic teams in 1995. The name was chosen for three reasons, the "Sky" half because the school previously at that site used the name Sky Pilots and was used to train WWII pilots, the "Hawks" for the red-tail hawks indigenous to West Tennessee.
