The Sudbury Wolves began their life as a Major Junior hockey team beginning with the 1972/73 season when the owners of the NOJHL junior league Sudbury Wolves purchased the OHA's Niagara Falls Flyers and merged the two franchises. The Wolves name had been synonomous with Sudbury junior hockey since the early 1920s and was an obvious choice to use with the new OHA team.

For the first 15 years of their existence in the league the Wolves used the colour scheme of green, gold, and white despite those colours having nothing to do with the actual appearance of a wolf. The team switched to a more appropriate blue and grey colour scheme for the 1989/90 season and continue to use it to this day.

The team has never won an OHL championship, making an appearance in the league finals only twice over their 40+ seasons. Famous Wolves alumni include Randy Carlyle, Mike Foligno, Ron Duguay, and Dale Hunter.
