The NBA Gatorade League (more popularly known as the "G-League", previously the "D-League") was created as an official minor league system for the National Basketball Association, playing their inaugural season in 2001 with eight teams, all of which located in the southeastern United States.

During the first three seasons none of the teams in the league had their own logo, identified only by name and colour scheme. An appropriately coloured league logo was used in the place of a team logo when necessary.

The league expanded rapidly as NBA teams quickly desired having their own affiliate teams with 25 teams set to compete for the 2017-18 season. The league entered into a naming-rights agreement with Gatorade for 2018 which saw the name of the league changed from the NBA D-League to the NBA G-League.
