Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Logos History

The Stephen F. Austin State University athletic teams have been known as the Lumberjacks since the school was established in 1923. The nickname was chosen during a school assembly soon after classes began that first year, submitted by SFA English professor T.E. Ferguson, who said he found the name appropriate for a school surrounded by the forest. The women's teams adopted the name Ladyjacks in the late 1930s, a name selected by June Irwin and Lucille Norton, two of SFA's pioneers in women's athletics.
