UC Riverside Highlanders Logos History

The University of California, Riverside was founded in 1954 and a name-the-team contest was held to determine what the athletic clubs would be known as. Suggestions such as Aphids, Rocks, and Tigers were among the nominees, however Hylanders came out on top following a write-in campaign organized by students. The spelling was changed to Highlanders and was chosen due to the school's higher elevation versus the City of Riverside.
