Virginia Cavaliers Logos History

The University of Virginia adopted the name Cavaliers for its athletic teams in 1923 following several years of no official nickname. The name was chosen in reference to the Royalist supporters, known as Cavaliers, with whom the commonwealth aligned themselves during the 17th Century British Civil War. The orange and blue colour scheme predates the name Cavaliers at the school by nearly 40 years, first used in 1888.
