Oral Roberts University`s athletic teams are known as the Golden Eagles, a nickname that was officially adopted on April 30, 1993. Originally ORU`s teams were known as the Titans and Lady Titans (or Titanettes), monikers that were adopted by a student body vote in 1965. Many of ORU`s students at the time hailed from the East Coast and were fans of the New York Titans (now Jets) professional football team. The name endured until 1993, when the search for a new nickname concluded with the selection of Golden Eagles. The Titans were represented by train imagery but also meant a mythological god which conflicted with the school`s values. With the adoption of the Golden Eagle name, ORU`s athletic colors also underwent a makeover, with Navy blue and Vegas gold replacing royal blue and old gold.
