Logo was sent in as an unsolicated concept by Bob Grove, a Cincinnati-based graphic designer in 1971. The team had coincidentally been considering a replacement to their long-used one-colour basketball globe wearing a crown logo when Grove's concept was delivered to the team offices. After four weeks the team decided to use Grove's design as their main logo beginning with the 1971-72 season.
"I started this project on my own not knowing the club was looking for a new emblem. I feel this new insignia gives the Royals more class and sophistication. The old emblem was basically just one colour, white. This new one is more massive and colourful. I wanted to keep the basketball and crown in the new insignia.
