The Nationals added this patch to their uniforms beginning on September 20, 2013 in memory of victims of the Washington Navy Yard shooting which had taken place four days earlier. The Nats previously paid tribute by wearing Navy Academy baseball caps during their pre-game routines the day after the shootings. Their game against the Braves on the 16th was postponed due to this incident.
