In September 1982, the University of Illinois system consolidated University of Illinois at Congress Circle (UICC)(1965)(later Chicago Circle) and University of Illinois at the Medical Center (UIMC) to form the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). The consolidated university adopted Flames as its athletic nickname by student votes at the two predecessor schools as a reference to the Great Chicago Fire. Their athletics logo for many years was composed of the academic flame mark combined with FLAMES. Logo shown is not the official version and colors may differ.
