Pittsburgh Panthers Logo

Alternate Logo (1973-1997)

What is this Pittsburgh Panthers Logo?

Single-color Script Pitt in blue. When football head coach Johnny Majors arrived on campus from Iowa State, he decided to give the program a makeover in every way. He wanted his team to look good on Saturdays, so Majors redesigned them. The school colors were old gold and navy blue, but Majors decided that a mustard yellow and royal blue looked sharper -in part because Pitt would not resemble the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as much. Majors, it turned out, loved the script UCLA on the Bruins` helmets, and he wanted a similar insignia on the helmets that could stand out nationally.
