A happy & resting kangaroo named Casey in blue & yellow wearing a white sweater with KCU letters representing University of Kansas City, the school`s name from 1933 through 1963. Last year of use likely differs. The designation of the kangaroo as the UMKC mascot dates back to the early days of the U. of Kansas City. Established in 1933, the school had grown to a four-year college by 1936 and the students felt the need of a designated mascot. The choice of the kangaroo was due to two circumstances: kangaroo rhymes with KCU, and at the time the students were searching for a mascot there were several stories in the Kanas City Star concerning two baby kangaroos recently acquired by Kansas City`s Swope Park Zoo. Walt Disney designed the first kangaroo, a pouchless character named Casey. Casey was so popular he was soon appearing on everything from notebook covers to ashtrays.
