ECHL Logos

The ECHL, originally known as the East Coast Hockey League, was founded in 1988. It began with five teams in the southeastern United States and has since grown to include teams across North America, including both the United States and Canada. As of the 2024-25 season, the ECHL comprises 29 teams and serves as a crucial developmental league for players, coaches, and officials on their path to the NHL and other professional leagues.

The ECHL operates as a mid-level professional league, positioned below the American Hockey League (AHL) in the North American hockey hierarchy and is affiliated with both the AHL and the NHL. The league's top prize, the Kelly Cup, is awarded annually to the playoff champion.
