California Golden Bears Logo

Alternate Logo (1978-2013)

What is this California Golden Bears Logo?

Primary Script Cal logo in blue with gold outline. The official Script Cal debuted in 1978 and is based off the Brush Script font. In the 1970s, other variations of the Script Cal were used until settling on this one. How did the Script Cal come to be? For many decades, the Block C represented California athletics but in the 1970s, all that changed. More emphasis was wanted on shortening the program name to Cal instead of California, Berkeley, or Cal-Berkeley. The script idea may have come from the Script Ohio displayed by Ohio State`s marching band. Cal & Ohio State had met in the 1950 Rose Bowl Game.
