The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league established in 1966. It was created to provide a platform for young players in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States to develop their skills and gain visibility in the path toward professional hockey. As of 2024, the WHL consists of 22 teams spread across four Canadian provinces—British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba—and two U.S. states—Washington and Oregon.

The WHL is a key member of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), alongside the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). This partnership enables the WHL to compete for the Memorial Cup, awarded annually to the CHL champion. The league has a strong tradition of developing NHL talent, with many former WHL players achieving successful careers in professional hockey. The WHL places a strong emphasis on both athletic and academic development, offering scholarships and educational support, ensuring players are well-prepared for their futures both on and off the ice.
